Question:      Dear scholars, As-Salamu `alaykum. Does Islam permit a husband to shave his wife's pubic hair and vice versa? Jazakum Allah khayran.

Dear brother in Islam, we would like to thank you for the great confidence you place in us, and we implore Allah Almighty to help us serve His cause and render our work for His sake.

There is no `awrah (parts of the body to be hidden) between the husband and wife. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Guard your private parts and do not expose them before anyone except your own spouse.” So, there is nothing wrong for husband and wife to shave each other’s pubic hair.

In his response to your question, Sheikh Ahmad Kutty, a senior lecturer and Islamic scholar at the Islamic Institute of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, states:

There is nothing wrong for a husband or wife, if they so wish, to shave each other’s pubic hair, for certainly they are allowed to see or touch such areas of their bodies which must remain covered from others. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Guard your private parts and do not expose them before anyone except your own spouse.”
